Principal Safety Consultant
Summary of Position:
As a Principal Safety Consultant within the Engineering Team, you will deliver independent, high-quality Safety consultancy across Defence and other highly regulated sectors. Acting as a trusted advisor, you will provide authoritative guidance, analysis, and assurance throughout the product, system or service acquisition lifecycle.
This role requires both technical depth and consultancy acumen: engaging with clients to scope and deliver assured outcomes, lead the development of safety artefacts, and support organisational decision-making. You will also contribute to the growth of Engage’s Safety capability by mentoring colleagues, supporting bids, and embedding best practice aligned with MOD, Civil Nuclear, and wider engineering/safety frameworks.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide Safety consultancy and assurance to MOD and industry clients, applying ASEMS, Defence Safety Authority (DSA) regulations, and relevant legislation.
Lead development, review, and delivery of Safety Case Reports and associated documentation, ensuring alignment with best practice, regulatory frameworks, and legislation.
Develop and maintain Hazard Logs and supporting analyses, ensuring completeness and traceability across the system lifecycle.
Perform Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Bow-Tie Analysis.
Provide Safety input to lifecycle management and design reviews (e.g. Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR)).
Assess supplier safety compliance in accordance with contractual, statutory, and regulatory safety requirements.
Provide Safety Case guidance and assurance to clients and suppliers against current policy, standards, and good practice (DSA02/03, Def Stan 00-056, JSP 815 etc).
Deliver Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) input to systems projects, providing technical advice to support safe and compliant designs.
Support key customer engagement, acting as a trusted advisor to Defence, nuclear, and industrial clients.
Contribute to bid development, preparing technical inputs, estimates, and safety strategy content.
Contribute to Safety and Environmental Committees (PSEC), audits, and assurance reviews.
Mentor consultants and contribute to internal knowledge sharing and process improvement.
Relevant Qualifications and Experience
You must be able to gain appropriate clearance for the role.
Broad understanding of Safety Legislation and Regulation applicable to Defence domains.
Proven experience in the development and assurance of Safety Case Reports, including ALARP assessments and preparation of safety arguments.
Comprehensive experience in hazard and risk management processes, including Hazard Identification, Hazard Analysis, Hazard Operability and Hazard Logging.
Demonstrated capability in performing Functional Safety Analysis using recognised methodologies.
Experience in System Safety Analysis such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Bow-Tie Analysis.
Working knowledge of MOD Safety Standards and Policy.
Proven ability to manage complex safety requirements within the Defence sector.
Understanding of the System Development Lifecycle aligned to the standard ‘V-model’, from concept through disposal.
Experience assessing supplier safety compliance against legislative and contractual requirements.
Deep knowledge in the application of ASEMS.
Ability to compile Safety Arguments using Goal Structuring Notation (GSN)

You will contribute to the development of safety artefacts, undertake hazard analysis, and assist in delivering assured safety outcomes throughout the product, system, or service lifecycle.
This role requires solid technical capability and a collaborative approach, working within multi-disciplinary teams to apply recognised frameworks such as ASEMS, Defence Safety Authority (DSA) regulations, and relevant UK legislation.
You will support client delivery, contribute to internal safety process improvement, and assist in bids and proposals under the guidance of a Principal Safety Consultant or the Capability Director.
